Varun Mitra went from being a detached son to a fierce competitor in Homi Adajania’s latest OTT offering ‘Saas, Bahu Aur Flamingo’. He plays the role of Dimple Kapadia’s son and their intense relationship in this crime drama received a lot of praise. Varun Mitra’s portrayal of Kapil undergoes several signification emotional changes in the narrative and saw him emerge as a ferocious winner in the final episode. In an interaction with ETimes, the actor opened up about the show, working with Dimple Kapadia and his next venture ‘Tejas’. Excerpts:

How would you describe your role of Kapil in ‘Saas, Bahu Aur Flamingo’?

When I met Homi, he just had an idea in his mind. And then I kind of added my own flavour to the role. Along the way, we just kind of kept adding nuances to the character and kept making him crazier and more complex and more layered. Kapil is constantly changing, which was what we wanted his vibe to be. There’s all that shit inside him, which is buried and nobody has addressed it. He’s ignored and made fun of by the whole family. So it all comes out in a dramatic fashion.

How would you describe like Dimple Kapadia as a co-star?

She’s really very chilled out. I was of course intimidated when I had to share the screen with Dimple ji. She is the ‘Dimple Kapadia’ at the end of the day. But once we met her, we felt like there was nobody called Dimple Kapadia on our set. She is just like every other actor and it was very chilled out. Everybody was just hungry to do their part well, including her. We hung out with her while staying in Jaipur for almost three months. Every day in the evening we would sit down for dinner, and have a conversation where everyone got to know each other so well that the bonding, sort of, became fluid.

How do you think Kapil’s character will move forward in the sequel?

I have no clue about that (laughs). He has just about come to power and realised what he is. It can go anywhere, he can do anything. A man who has found power for the first time – can be a dangerous being.

Can you shed some light on your character in Kangana Ranaut’s Tejas?

My character is that of a musician in the movie. I play the role of Kangana’s love interest. Working with her was an easy experience as well. She is very professional. There is also an Arijit Singh song in the film, which features me. It was nice to associate with his voice again after ‘Jalebi’.
