Oppenheimer box office collection Day 3: Christopher Nolan’s film creates new IMAX record; earns Rs 49 crore at weekend showdown with ‘Barbie’ | English Movie News

Filmmaker Christopher Nolan‘s ‘Oppenheimer‘ may not have received as big a reception at the global box office, but it surely set the Indian box office on fire. The historical biopic starring Cillian Murphy in the lead recorded a good opening collection at the Indian box office and managed to maintain its hold over the ticket windows through its first weekend.

According to reports, Oppenheimer not only had a good opening collection of an estimated Rs 14.50 crore, but it went on to earn over Rs 17.25 crore on Saturday and maintained a steady graph by adding another Rs 17 crore to its collections on Sunday. This put’s the film’s overall weekend collections at an estimated Rs 49 crore. The film thus fell a little shy of making a huge Rs 50 crore opening, states industry tracker Sacnilk.
Meanwhile, Greta Gerwig‘s Barbie, starring Margot Robbie in the lead, earned an estimated Rs 7.15 crore on day three, thus taking its overall weekend box office numbers to an estimated Rs 22.1 crore.

It must be noted that while Oppenheimer was released across 1900 screens in the country, Barbie was only released on 850 screens. Oppenheimer, which screened in IMAX theatres, recorded a sale of an estimated 1.4 million tickets. Barbie, on the other hand, saw a sale of over 500,000 tickets. The two films broke several records in the IMAX format as shows as early as 12 am and 3 am were running House Full.
Both films performed better than expected at the box office, keeping in mind the current market trends. The Tom Cruise starrer Mission: Impossible 7, also recorded good business last weekend, earning an estimated Rs 63 crore in an extended five-day weekend.
According to reports, the numbers raked in by Oppenheimer, Barbie and Mission: Impossible 7 have collectively put up one of the best weekends for Hollywood films in Indian box office history. The total of the three films put up an impressive Rs 94 crore weekend, which has now emerged as the fifth-best weekend for Hollywood films in India.
