Raj Babbar started his career in the late 70s, but it was the 1980s film ‘Insaaf Ka Taraazu’ which got him in the limelight. The actor later went on to appear in many movies like ‘Nikaah’, ‘Main Aawara Hoon’ amidst many others. But did you know that he was cast in Amitabh BachchanNamak Halaal‘ as well?
‘Namak Halaal’ was supposed to star Vinod Khanna along with Bachchan but since he announced his retirement from movies, director Prakash Mehra was supposed to cast Raj in the film. When he got a call from a director like Mehra, he was more scare and less happy because of an earlier incident. Earlier, Raj was supposed to be a part of aDilip Kumar film but last minute it didn’t work out. Hence, Raj was apprehensive and asked Prakash if he could get a place to stay in Mumbai for a year. They sent him a flight ticket and Raj then came to Mumbai with just Rs 100 in his pocket. He had a scooter which he sold and gave that money to his wife as his daughter was just born. He told his wife he’s going for one year.
But just when he thought everything is working out well, Raj was fired from ‘Namak Halaal’, because a lot of people didn’t want to work with him. Raj then told Prakash Mehra that since he had promised to work with him, he should atleast allow him to stay in Mumbai for a year and the director agreed.
In all probability, the same role which was supposed to be done by Raj, later went on to Shashi Kapoor. ‘Namak Halaal’ also starred Smita Patil, Parveen Babi and Waheeda Rehman.
