Eros cinema in Churchgate is one of the oldest single screens in Mumbai. It not only has heritage value now but several movie lovers have memories attached to it. The old charm of South Mumbai, aroma of fresh popcorn and the joy of watching movies on celluloid – these memories remain quite fond in the hearts of cinema lovers. Several images of Eros being torn down went viral since morning. However, the truth is that the art deco building is not being demolished. Etimes has exclusively learnt that Eros is under renovation and hence the covers over the building. The threatre will soon be restored to its former glory.
Meanwhile a few upset celebs took to Twitter to share fond memories of the icon theatre. For comedian-turned actor Vir Das, it was this very theatre that sparked his dream of becoming an actor. He wrote, “Watched Rang De Basanti there. Had a job at CNBC, walked out of the theatre, decided to give being a performer a full shot, started auditioning.”

Screenwriter Apurva Asrani had shared these images and said, “Heartbreaking to see #ErosTheatre being torn down. This South Bombay Art Deco landmark, built in 1938, was was where I bunked college to go to. It’s where I went on my first date & where my first film #Satya released in ’98. Sad that Mumbai can’t preserve its heritage buildings.”

Filmmaker Vivek Agnihotri also re-shared his tweet and expressed his heart-break. “Each time a single screen theatre is torn down, a piece of my childhood dies. 4 of my films released here. Watched hundreds of films, specially Matinee shows of world films. But then I also understand practicality and viability….. #Nostalgia”
