Karan Johar isn’t just one of the biggest film-makers in the country, but his production company is one of the biggest in the movie business. The producer-director was recently on a podcast where he spoke about the business of movies and how his company has grown into what it is.
Karan that he was absolutely clueless about the finances after his father’s death and on the 4th day after Yash Johar passed away, a family friend got him a letter from his father which had all the details of the finances, cash, bank details. The letter even had a list of names of people he should trust and not trust. Karan took that letter as a bible. He later called his childhood friend Apoorva Mehta who left his entire life in London and came here. Karan revealed he’s very scared of Apoorva because he keeps a check on even his personal expenses and all the splurging.

In this podcast, KJo revealed that while ‘Student Of The Year’ had done well at the box-office, above 70 crore, he still suffered a loss of about 15-20 crore since he had spent a lot on the film. The losses were recovered later, when they made ‘Badrinath Ki Dulhania’, ‘2 States’, ‘Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhania’, ‘Hasee Toh Phasee’ with the actors. The filmmaker had signed a three-film deal with the actors who were already stars and that helped to recover the loss of ‘Student Of The Year’ from these movies.
He further revealed that a huge pie of the film’s share goes to the actor, hence he called out the actors for charging a huge fee. Karan said, actors can’t ask for 20 crore if their opening is not even of 5 crore. The producer shared that they were not planing to make ‘Kaal’. But Shah Rukh Khan called him and said, it’s a small film hence they should make it. SRK told him that he should make his mistakes and learn from them. Then they made ‘Kaal’ when they were clueless how to produce and sell it, but then they made films after films.
