In 2019 when Ayushmann Khurrana donned Pooja’s avatar for the first time in Dream Girl, the film went on to become a sensation grossing more than Rs 200 crore at the global box office. It was also one of the biggest hits of Ayushmann’s career. And going by the stupendous success, talks had begun about making a sequel of the film, but due to global issues regarding Covid-19, everything came to a standstill and the sequel is coming out only in 2023.
While in Dream Girl, Ayushmannonly had to talk in Pooja’s voice, in the sequel he actually dresses like one.The makers did a very good job when it came to the promotions of the film to create the buzz. But the film, which is a sequel to a successful film, has taken a slow start at the advance booking counter. As per Sacnilk the film has managed to sell about 18500 tickets so far for its opening day. But the team is sure as the release date comes closer, the numbers will rise. Most tickets currently have been sold in Mumbai and Delhi NCR region followed by Bangalore and Hyderabad.
The film is expected to face competition from Sunny Deol’s Gadar 2 and Akshay Kumar-Pankaj Tripathi’s OMG 2 which has seen a dip only in its second week. But with the weekend holiday coming in, one might see a rise in their ticket sales.
In an interview with ETimes, Ayushmann mentioned Dream Girl 2 is the safest franchise. He said, “More than jitters, I think I’m most confident about the film. And it was a very organic story which went ahead. And Ektaa R Kapoor, Raj Shaandilyaa and I together, we thought till the time we dont crack a storyline which is like, reaches the benchmark of the first one, we should not go for it. Im glad its equally funny, probably double the fun because it is 2.0.”
