Spider-Man: Across The Spider-Verse has received some fantastic reviews across the globe. The animated film’s lead voice actors Hailee Steinfeld and Shameik Moore speak to ETimes about the film’s new Indian flavour what with the character of Pavitr Prabhakar (Indian Spider-Man) making his debut. Hailee and Shameik also confess that they’re fans of the series’ animation and music. Read on…

In your new film, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, India plays a significant role. Was this your first exposure to Indian culture and its elements?

Shameik Moore: Well, my first real encounter with Indian culture was when I attended Druid Hills High School. It was a diverse school with students from various backgrounds, and I had the chance to try my first Indian meal there with some friends. But I have to say, in this film, Mumbattan (a fictional Indian city) is absolutely incredible. When we explore that part, it’s a mind-blowing experience. I felt like I learned so much about the culture. Chris and Phil, the directors, were really engaged with the actors and wanted to ensure authenticity. They did an amazing job capturing the essence of the culture, and it made me want to learn more and actually visit India.
Hailee Steinfeld: Absolutely! We should definitely plan a trip to India.

Have either of you ever worn a Spider-Man costume in real life? How did it turn out?

Hailee: Well, I haven’t worn one yet, but I’m really looking forward to it. I can’t wait to let everyone know that I’m about to rock a Spider-Man costume. It’s going to be exciting!
Shameik: Yeah, we have a premiere and an after-party coming up, so I might just surprise everyone with a Spider-Man look there.

The animation style and music in Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse were incredible. Do you feel that it has reached an even higher level in Spider-Man: Across The Spider-Verse?

Hailee: Absolutely! The animation and music have taken things to a whole new level in this film. I honestly didn’t think it could get any better because the first movie was already mind-blowing. When I saw the final product this time, I was completely blown away. It’s truly something special.

Shameik, Miles Morales does some incredible things for Gwen in the film. What’s the craziest thing you would do for love in real life?

Shameik: In real life, the craziest thing I would do for love… I think swinging from buildings and maybe even riding on top of a subway to express my love. Of course, only if I had some security measures in place, and if I knew she’d love me back. I’d do it all for love!

The film showcases a great parent-child relationship for both characters. Is that the emotional core of the film? Does it really tug at the heartstrings?

Hailee: The dynamic between Miles, Gwen, and their parents is definitely a vital part of this film. It represents the stage of life they are going through and it should resonate with people of all ages. Parents will relate to the struggle of letting their children grow and become independent, letting them spread their wings and fly. Young people will see themselves in Miles and Gwen’s situations.
Shameik: Absolutely, I completely agree with Hailee.
