On the 140th birth anniversary of Vinayak Damodar Savarkar, Randeep Hooda dropped the first teaser of his directorial debut titled ‘Swatantrya Veer Savarkar‘.
The actor, who plays the titular role, talked about the idea behind the movie and shared, “Savarkar led an incredible life, and as I learned more about him while researching for my film, I have come to admire him tremendously. So it gives me immense pleasure to share a sneak peek into our film on his 140th birthday.”
Taking to his Twitter handle he wrote, “The most wanted Indian by the British. The inspiration behind revolutionaries like – Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose, Bhagat Singh & Khudiram Bose. Who was #VeerSavarkar? Watch his true story unfold! Presenting @RandeepHooda in & as #SwantantryaVeerSavarkar In Cinemas 2023.”

The various claims made in the teaser trailer have seemingly irked historians and even the Bose family. Chandra Kumar Bose, the grandnephew of the late freedom fighter took to his Twitter handle to slam the director for ‘distorting’ history. “Sorry- the most wanted leader & freedom fighter was – #NetajiSubhasChandraBose. He was the only front-line leader who had ‘shoot at sight orders’ & had sacrificed his life on 18 August 1945, for the freedom of our nation. If you respect #Savarkar pl don’t distort history,” Bose tweeted.

In his film, Hooda claimed that Bose and fellow freedom fighters like Bhagat Singh and Khudiram Bose were ‘inspired’ by Savarkar. Strongly condemning the tall claims made in the film, Bose said in an interview that his granduncle was inspired by Swami Vivekananda who was his guru and Deshbandhu Chitranjan Das, who was his political mentor.

Calling Savarkar a ‘great personality’, he clarified that the two men were ‘diametrically opposite’ and that he didn’t see why Netaji would follow Savarkar‘s principles and ideology when he actually ‘opposed’ him.
He even called to mind Netaji’s writings that stated that he could not expect anything from Savarkar and Muhammad Ali Jinnah in the freedom movement against the British. He added that Netaji was a ‘secular leader’ and not only opposed Savarkar’s ideology but also opposed those who were ‘communal’.

He further added that the claims made by Hooda in the clip were ‘absolutely incorrect’. He also requested Randeep to project the correct and true history of India’s freedom struggle. To wrongly project history on-screen, he said ‘it would be a great injustice to the youth’.
Bose alleged that Hooda was trying to create a controversy so that his film gains some mileage, and said it was an offence to ‘project wrong history’. While acknowledging that people had the right to project anything they wanted, he added that no one had the right to distort history.

Directed and co-written by Randeep Hooda the film which also stars Ankita Lokhande, is slated to release in cinemas this year.
