Tabassum is a legend. And legends don’t die. They just disappear physically. I still wonder why the word ‘legend’ has hardly been used for Tabassum ji. Her death fills me with grief.

That my wish did not get fulfilled is something that I shall rue for the rest of my life, but she is the second personality in my 21-year old career in journalism whom I so dearly wanted to interview but could not, the other being the late legend Ashok Kumar.

This morning her son Hoshang tells me on the phone, when I called him, “Mummy did say often that she has to do an interview with ETimes.
Ab woh reh gaya.” One of my colleagues at ETimes also was in fact in frequent touch with Tabassum ji and Hoshang for an interview. Believe it or not, just yesterday morning, I thought that I should call her and request again.

Tabassum ji left the world of living on Friday, November 18. The sad news broke out quite late in the evening on Saturday, November 19. Hoshang revealed, “My mother wanted it that way. She always said that she wants to go very quietly and the world shouldn’t know for 2 days.”

Asking him about her talk in the hospital, Hoshang said, “She kept saying
jaldi karo, mujhe ghar jaana hai to shoot for ‘Tabassum Talkies’ (the show she has been running on her YouTube channel).”

We at ETimes stand by Hoshang and the entire family of Tabassum ji in their hour of crisis. May her soul rest in peace.
