The Kerala Story’ which released on May 5 has been a topic of discussion ever since it released. The film revolves around girls from Kerala who were converted to Islam. The film tries to raise awareness against terrorism. However, a section of the society feels it’s a propaganda film. Hence, it was banned in West Bengal. Now the Supreme Court has passed a verdict in the film’s favour and removed the ban yet, the authorities aren’t allowing theatre owners of Bengal to screen the film.
Talking about this issue, producer Vipul Amrutlal Shah says, “It is absolutely shocking that after the judgment, there is a complete illegal ban imposed in theaters in Bengal. The theater owners are getting threat calls from the cops and the administration that if they open the booking station, their theater won’t be secure. A couple of people who had opened for the booking have come down so heavily on the theater owners that nobody is able to run the film”.
He further added that this is violation of the Supreme Court’s order. “Theater owners are threatened so they are not able to come out in the open. They are not able to give any statement to this effect. However, they want to run the film. They want to show the film. But they are not allowed. This is a blatant violation of Supreme Court orders. I am shocked at these people who are the champions of democracy. Both states are actually behaving in the most undemocratic way and it’s shameful to stop the film after a Supreme Court order,” he said.
‘The Kerala Story’ is directed by Sudipto Sen and stars Yogita Bihani, Sonia Balani, Siddhi Idnani and Adah Sharma.
