The Kerala Story‘ revolves around the four women from Kerala who were converted to Islam. The film is said to be based on a true incident however, it has surrounded itself into several controversies. However, that has worked in its favour because it has seen an extra-ordinary Monday.
The film which released on May 5, has seen a jump of almot 50 percent from its first day. Even though, the numbers are less from Sunday, they are at par to the Saturday numbers which is great. This trend isn’t just seen in the multiplexes but even at some mass centres, the collections were better than Saturday, in areas like Mumbai, Central India, UP, Bihar and Bangalore.
The film was banned in West Bengal and is out of theatres now, and still. This ban has further worked in the film’s favour because it has piqued the interest of cinegoers regarding its subject. However, the industry and a large section of the audience does feel that it shouldn’t have faced a ban since it was passed by the censor board who have an authority.
As far as its collection is concerned, ‘The Kerala Story’ has collected about 43 crore nett as its total so far, as per boxofficeindia.com. This is a great number for a small budget film like this. The trade also predicts that the film’s second week will be better than its week one. On its first day, the film collected approx Rs 6.75 crore while the collections of Saturday and Monday were almost the same upto Rs 10 crore. On Sunday, the film clocked in about Rs 16 crore. This collection is higher than many big releases which were expected to do well.
‘The Kerala Story’ is directed by Sudipto Sen and produced by Vipul Shah.
