Sudipto Sen-directed ‘The Kerala Story’ managed to overcome all the hurdles and was finally released in the theatres on May 5 despite being embroiled in several controversies. Due to its sensitive subject, the film even left social media divided with netizens coming up with a mixed response. The Adah Sharma-starrer also became the talk of the town on its opening day. Now, we have the Day 2 box office numbers and it seems the film, after opening to some decent numbers, has witnessed a massive growth on its first weekend.
According to reports, the film earned near about Rs 8.03 crore on Day 1. On Day 2, ‘The Kerala Story’ reportedly minted Rs 11.22 crore with an almost 40 percent growth in numbers. It means the total collection of the film now is Rs 19.25 crore. Industry experts are saying the film has an overall occupancy of 36.13% in the Hindi belt. We already know Sudipto Sen’s film has faced criticism for alleged factual inaccuracies but the box office numbers seem to be working well for it.

Starring Adah Sharma, Yogita Bihani, Siddhi Idnani, and Sonia Balani in key roles, on Saturday the film reportedly earned around Rs 5 crore in the national chains, as compared to its collection of Rs. 3.50 crore on the first day.
The controversy surrounding ‘The Kerala Story’ started when the official trailer of the film stated that 32,000 women from Kerala have gone missing in the recent past and these women have joined the terrorist group ISIS. This statement led to a heated political debate and many leaders questioned the intention of the makers. Even Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan claimed that the film is trying to spread false propaganda. However, the trailer was later altered to declare that the film is based on the real-life incidents of three women.
Responding to the allegations and criticism the makers claimed that the numbers don’t matter and that they had used the 32,000 number as an arbitrary number only. He also insisted that the film has been made based on actual facts.
