Actress Halle Bailey is absorbing the praise and admiration coming her way for her lead role in the live action film The Little Mermaid and chooses to ignore the negativity that was only transient as she was the target of a social media backlash for her casting as Ariel in The Little Mermaid.
Her casting was a historic call as she is the first African American to play the underwater character and only the second Black person to be cast as the lead in a Disney film. The first being Jamie Foxx who was cast as a middle-school band teacher in an animated Disney flick. That film from 2020 went on to be nominated for several awards including two Academy Awards.
Halle clarified that her parents and grandparents had been through very tough times as racial segregation was a very real unpleasant fact of life for them in America. Her grandfather was in tears as he watched the film’s trailer on repeat.
She explained to Reuters, “Special moments like that make me feel like I’m in the right place because they have been through so much. My grandmother remembers seeing her family members in the cotton fields.”
She also explained previously how it would have completely changed her life had she seen African-American characters playing lead roles in Disney films which were the staple of children’s movies.
The Little Mermaid is highly anticipated and hits theatres on May 26.
