Soon after the release of ‘The Kerala Story’, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee called for a ban of the film in the state. Directed by Sudipto Sen, the film narrates the story of a group of women who converted to Islam and joined ISIS.
Amid this controversy, filmmaker Anurag Kashyap has penned a cryptic note about films being banned. Reacting to a quote by French writer Voltaire “I do not agree with what you have to say, but I’ll defend to the death your right to say it,” Anurag tweeted, “You agree with the film or not, be it propaganda, counter propaganda, offensive or not, to ban it is just wrong.”
He also gave a shout out to Sudhir Mishra’s recently released film ‘Afwaah’ and added, “You want to fight propaganda. Then go in numbers and see the film that talks against misuse of social media and how inherent prejudice is weaponised to create hatred and unrest. It’s running in cinemas and is called ‘Afwaah.’ Go make your voice stronger. Go make a point. That’s the right way to fight.”
‘The Kerala Story’ has been performing well at the box office. Reacting to the film’s success, Adah told ETimes, “In spite of not belonging to a film family the love I’ve received from one and all is unprecedented. The whole nation is rooting for me. I’m humbled and numb. The dreams I had for myself have been so tiny. These are all the dreams that my loved ones have for me that are coming true.”
