Arbaaz Khan has got his father, celebrated writer Salim Khan, to spill some interesting details about his personal life. On his son’s chat show, Salim Khan spoke at length about how he married Salma, despite opposition from his Hindu father-in-law.
Not many know that Arbaaz’s mother Salma was Hindu at birth and was called Sushila. Initially Salim Khan and Sushila would meet secretly, but later insisted, “I would like to meet your parents.” Salim Khan said that when he went to meet them, he found that there were many people there. “I have never been as nervous as I was then. Everyone had come to see me like I was a new animal in the zoo…my father-in-law said, ‘We have enquired about you. You are educated and from a good family…magar religion acceptable nahin hain’,” said Salim Khan.
He had then assured his father-in-law that there may be thousands of problems between them but, “Religion will never be one of them.”

This was in 1964 and 17 years later, in 1981, Salim married dancer Helen. It was difficult for his first wife, but eventually the family adjusted and Arbaaz and his brothers started calling her Helen Aunty.
