Actor Gajraj Rao, mostly known for playing believable, comic and down to earth characters in his movies, had actually started out as an antagonist in director Shekhar Kapur’s acclaimed 1994 drama Bandit Queen.
In a recent interaction with Cyrus Broacha’s on his podcast, he opened up on his audition for the same, adding that he came to know of it from filmmaker Tigmanshu Dhulia. Those days, a lot of movies were being shot in Delhi, however, according to Gajraj, theatre actors carried a bit of arrogance with them when it came to giving auditions since they found the process ‘shameful’.

Elaborating further, the 52-year-old said that eventually, he did go for the audition since everyone was in awe of Shekhar Kapur after he had directed Mr. India. During the audition, Shekhar pulled him aside and asked him if he was getting scared during the audition process.

Confused, Gajraj left the audition in a huff and narrated his ordeal to Tigmanshu, who could not make much of it either. Eventually, he decided not to think much about it; however he soon learnt that he had bagged the role, with 30,000 as his signing amount.

On the workfront, Gajraj Rao was seen in the movie Thai Massage last year.
