Qala which streams on Netflix from today, has a surprise cameo by none other than Anushka Sharma.
Anushka , whose brother Karnesh produces
Qala,is seen in a black-and-white montage as an actress of the 1940s lip-syncing a song sung by the protagonist Qala Manjushree played by Tripti Dimri.
The sequence in
Qala has Anushka Sharma crooning on screen while the audience claps and cheers in appreciation.
The sequence is a comment on how heroines on screen used to take all the credit for playback songs until Lata Mangeshkar came into the film industry and changed the practice of mentioning on the vinyl record the name of the character played in the film by the actress rather than the playback singer.
Qala harks back with heroic nostalgia into the pre-Mangeshkar era when playback singers were invisible entities. Varun Grover plays a progressive lyricist named Majrooh, modelled on Majrooh Sultanpuri.
